Google and the 700 MHz Spectrum

Google is going for it and they will probably win… They want a part of the 700 MHz spectrum and they have a cost in mind…

Here’s the article I picked up today:

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Nov. 30 (AP) — Google will apply to bid for wireless spectrum in an upcoming government auction, the company said today.

The Federal Communications Commission is auctioning the 700-megahertz spectrum to increase bandwidth for mobile phone and Internet services.

Google covets the “C Block” of the spectrum — which carries a reserve price of $4.6 billion — because regulators stipulated that whoever operates it must allow their users to download any software application they want to a mobile device.

This appears that Google is really getting into their new ANDROID project and this appears to be a part of that… The auction is on Jan. 24, 2008 and it’s going to be a fun auction to hear about… I’ll keep you updated….
